Description

Saptarhikangresam –  10 acts’ Sanskrit Play (Samavakara), written on the General Elections for the Parliament in 1977. The word Sapta and Rishi both denote the number 7 and put together make the digit 77. Thus it is a real depiction of the entire political development all over the country that took place during 1977 Parliamentary election, in which Indian National Congress was defeated for the first time after independence.

The play begins with the meeting of Executive Committee of Indian National Congress to discuss judgment of Allahabad High Court in which election to the Parliament of its President Smt. Indira Gandhi was declared illegal. It ends with the declaration of the defeat of stalwarts of INC all over India in the General Election and victory of Janata Party. The entire political scenario of that time has been depicted lively by the poet throughout in the play.

The poet has introduced number of good feelings and ideas for the betterment of country, criticizing the efforts made by others to hinder its progress. The poet says that purity in education system is the chief source of development of any country.

India believes in the safety of the womb of a mother, the endless chain of birth of our heroes.

Poetic flow is visible throughout. The fourth act is enriched with impressive political statements of different political leaders of that period. The reader can go through them with great interest in one stretch.

The language is impressive and fluent. The poet has followed all the standard rules set forth for the composition of a Sanskrit Play. Though the dialogues of various political leaders are very much lengthy, however they are the need of main theme and thus poet himself declares it to be a Samavakara. Bharatavakya of the play is presented by a man from the public instead of any political leader, because the poet considers the public to be important and not the leaders.

Saptarshikangresam was composed by the poet in 1977 itself when the entire political scenario was afresh before his eyes and the statements of political leaders were very much dominating the print and electronic media of that period. This overrules any chance of the missing or misinterpretation of the statements of political leaders of that period. This is a great effort to portray present day history in literary form and it may be a precious historical document for future generations. The depiction of political scenario proves that Sanskrit language has an unparallel ability to present even contemporary historical events in an interesting form.
